The primary function of the vestibular system is to maintain balance and spatial orientation. This system is crucial for sensing the body’s position in space and the movement of the head. It comprises structures located in the inner ear, including the semicircular canals and otolith organs. These structures detect changes in head position and motion, allowing the body to react appropriately to maintain equilibrium.

The vestibular system integrates information from the visual and proprioceptive systems to create a coherent understanding of body orientation and movement. When functioning properly, it enables individuals to perform various activities, such as standing still, walking, or turning their heads without losing balance.

Understanding the vestibular system's role is fundamental for audiologists, as issues with balance and spatial orientation can often coexist with auditory challenges.
